Nymans, West Sussex - National Trust property - 29.03.14

Image
Saturday was a fine, dry and sunny day, so we decided to visit Nymans in West Sussex. Nymans is owned by the National Trust, but was previously owned by the Messel family, a City Banking family. - Oddly, my late father in-law, worked for the Messel family and and visited here on an outing with the Bank. Sadly, the house was partially raised to the ground by fire in 1947. It was partially re-built and occupied by the Messels daughter, Anne, and her husband, the 6th Earl of Rosse. In 1953 the property and gardens were willed to the National Trust.  As you will see, the house is a ruin, although the ground floor where Lady Rosse lived, was habitable, and normally open to visitors. Although it is very sad that this fine building is no more, what remains is very atmospheric, and I love to visit.

I love the cactus area in the Glasshouse This waterfall always looks good. Just a few flowers open in the Alpine House s

Winter at RHS Wisley

Just before Christmas a friend and I decided to visit Wisley Gardens - it was a very cold and windy day, but I got a few photographs with my small Nikon camera. I loved the colours in these leaves. Gunnera covered over with their own leaves to protect them over the winter.  They mirror the pagoda roof. I just loved the colour of this tree And this oak tree at the end of the bonsai walk.
